Ottorino Barrassi was the Italian vice-president of FIFA and the president of FIGC. He secretly transported the Jules Rimet Trophy from a bank in Rome to a shoe-box under his bed. Barrassi did this to keep Adolf Hitler and the Nazis from taking it.
Stolen in England
It was March 20,1966 four months before the World Cup in England. The trophy was stolen while being publicly exhibited at Westminster Central Hall. It was found 7 days later under a garden hedge in Upper Norwood, South London wrapped in a newspaper by a dog named Pickles.
Lost Forever?
The Football Association secretly manufactured a replica to be used for exhibits. The original was returned to FIFA in 1970. Brazil won for the third time and was allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently. It was put on display in Rio de Janeiro in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass.On december 20,1983 the wooden rear was pried open wit ha crowbar and the cup was stolen again. The men that did it were caught and convicted in absentia. The trophy was not found but is said that it was melted down.
