From 1930 to 1970 the Jules Rimet trophy was awarded to the winners of the World Cup. This trophy was named after the FIFA president Jules Rimet who set up the first tournament.
FIFA World Cup Trophy
A replacement trophy was commissioned for the 1974 World Cup. The designer was Silvio Gazzaniga. The trophy is 36 centimeters high and is 18 carat gold and weighs 13.6 pounds.
The Trophy Today
Today the names of the teams that win the World Cup are engraved onto a plate at the bottom of the World Cup Trophy. Space is running out on the plate and it is predicted that the plate will have to be replaced for the 2030 World Cup. Winners do not take home the original trophy but rather a gold plated replica. FIFA knows what happened to the Jules Rimet Trophy and does not want it to happen again.
